Malta Chamber presents good governance document to Leader of the Opposition

“There are several points of convergence between the proposals of the Malta Chamber in favour of a climate of good governance and those of the Opposition on the same subject,” said Perit David Xuereb, president of the Malta Chamber, during a meeting with the Leader of Partit Nazzjonalista Dr Adrian Delia, last week.

Perit Xuereb was leading a delegation from the Malta Chamber to meet with the Leader of the Opposition, to present him with Ethical business calls for change – a manifesto for good governance, a document containing more than 60 concrete recommendations aimed at cleaning Malta’s reputation.

“The Malta Chamber’s proposals and the position of the Opposition on the subject of good governance, cover a considerable amount of common ground,” Xuereb told the Leader of the Opposition.

Xuereb reiterated the Chamber’s call for a concerted effort by all involved to clean Malta’s good name. He added that this effort couldn’t only be done by government and the institutions, but the Opposition and the private sector also had a crucial role to play.

“The responsibility for good governance is a shared responsibility, which needs to be carried by all,” Xuereb concluded.

Ethical business calls for change – a manifesto for good governance is the result of a decision taken by the Chamber’s Council in December 2019, in response to legitimate concerns raised on the state of good governance in Malta.

The Council in fact established a multidisciplinary working group made up of a number of expert contributors, tasked with researching and formulating a policy document on Good governance and best ethical standards and practices for the country.

The document means to serve as valuable guidance for the Prime Minister, in his efforts to tackle, at the earliest, the necessary reforms.
