UM Digital Arts students behind this year’s Malta 2020 Carnival image

A group of BFA (Bachelors of Fine Arts) Digital Arts students at the University of Malta have designed the official imagery of the Malta Carnival, which was organised by Festivals Malta between 21 and 25 February.

Amber Seychell, Francesca Falzon, Lisa Marie Kahler and Sergio Laferla constituted one of the student groups who joined forces during the first semester of their third year to design a mock-up poster that would eventually end up being used to promote this year’s Malta Carnival activities.

Their collective idea was the winning one picked up by Festivals Malta, so much so that the visuals ended up on all the marketing collateral of the Malta Carnival 2020 activities.

The visuals, featuring yellow and purple accents, portray two grandmasters, namely Lascaris and de la Valette, on opposing sides of a king’s playing card. The idea, the students told the Newspoint team, came about because of the two grandmasters’ opposing views on carnival. While Lascaris disliked the celebrations, de la Valette was associated with the joys of this feast of colours.

“The clients’ theme this year revolved around yellow and purple and they wanted to boost that colour scheme. We took that on board and made it even more colourful to tie everything together,” said Falzon.

When asked by Newspoint what they enjoyed the most about this project, Seychell commented that it was “the aspect of working together”, while in Laferla’s opinion, it was “our complementary skills that enabled us to work quite efficiently”.

Hoping there will be similar experiences in the near future, the students said they look forward to other collaborations, which will happen soon when, together with their peers, they will be holding their Bachelor of Fine Arts, Digital Arts exhibition in May.
