Central Bank of Malta governor participat­es in the 2023 IMF/WBG annual meetings

The Central Bank of Malta Governor, Professor Edward Scicluna, as governor for the IMF and alternate governor for the WBG, participat­ed in the IMF/WBG annual meetings. The events took place in Marrakesh, Morocco between 9 and 15 October.

The IMF/WBG annual meetings bring

together central bankers, internatio­nal financial institutio­ns, ministers of finance and developmen­t, private sector executives, representa­tives from civil society organisati­ons and academics to discuss issues of global concern.

Discussion­s within this year’s annual meetings focused on building resilience, securing transforma­tional reforms and reinvigora­ting global cooperatio­n. In her Curtain Raiser Speech, IMF’s managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, highlighte­d the important role the Fund has to play in helping countries identify policy choices and pursuing successful growth. She also underlined that the goal must be “to build bridges to strong future growth that is both sustainabl­e and inclusive”.

The governor was accompanie­d by Alexander Demarco, deputy governor of the Central Bank of Malta. On the

sidelines of the events, Governor Scicluna also met with the executive directors of the IMF and the WBG respective­ly, representa­tives of a leading rating agency and a number of bankers and central bankers. Prof. Scicluna was also interviewe­d by the CNBC senior correspond­ent Silvia Amaro.

With 190 member countries, the IMF and the WBG have essential roles in upholding the internatio­nal financial system. The IMF ensures global economic stability, while the WBG works on poverty reduction and developmen­t in lower-income nations.
