‘Malta should be a centre for innovation in medical related technology,’ PM says
Prime Minister Robert Abela said that Malta should be a centre for innovation in the medical technology sector, in his address in the Malta Med-Tech World Summit to various investors and executive leaders of technology companies in the medical field.
Abela on Thursday said that this would benefit both the community and the industry itself, possible only because "our country has a solid foundation in this area through continuous investment in healthcare and topnotch technological infrastructure for patients".
He said that the Med-Tech sector is another economic niche in the country and that
Malta is moving towards a digital transformation that will also result in the delivery of digital services related to health, known as eHealth.
Abela expressed support to the arrival of investors with specialised and innovative companies that provide citizens with the highest quality of life through their services.
"We believe that healthcare is not a privilege, but a guaranteed right for every citizen, so we will continue to invest to provide the best quality care for the people," Abela said, adding that the MedTech sector offers opportunities for those seeking high-quality careers and better patient care.
Abela said that Malta needs to be at the forefront of innovation, especially in the medical sector. He said that research and innovation are already occurring in our country in the fields of pharmaceuticals and robotic surgery at Mater Dei Hospital.
Abela said that the fact that Malta effectively responds to the dynamic regulatory framework in this industry, indicates that Malta is not only open to offering the best environment for emerging investments, but also shows that the country safeguards the quality of products related to innovation and technology in the medical sector.
He acknowledged the role of the Maltese Medicines Authority in this regard.
Abela also said that Malta is producing quality professionals in the medical field through the University of Malta and the Queen Mary University of London campus in Gozo.
Abela also called on local and foreign companies to use Malta and Gozo as a hub for their IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) project.
