Lidl launches its ‘food saving bag’ and promotes the conscious consumptio­n of fruits and vegetables

A new initiative against food waste that offers customers the opportunit­y to buy bags of fruit and vegetables that are imperfectl­y shaped at a discounted price. In addition to combating waste, Lidl will also be supporting Caritas, a local NGO, with a donation of 50 cents from every bag purchased.

The very first Malta National Transport awards ceremony, hosted by Transport Malta together with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastruc­ture and Capital Projects, concluded with a celebratio­n of innovation and excellence in the transport sector.

This event recognised and honoured outstandin­g contributi­ons towards improving transporta­tion and mobility in Malta.

The awards were keenly contested, reflecting the diverse and dynamic nature of Malta’s transport sector. The winners, selected through a rigorous, transparen­t and independen­t eat, or with slightly damaged packaging. The initiative, which involves all 10 local Lidl stores, will offer the brand’s customers the opportunit­y to join the fight against food waste by purchasing these special bags of perfectly edible fruits and vegetables that adjudicati­on process by a panel of esteemed experts, demonstrat­ed achievemen­ts in their respective fields.

The winners

Infrastruc­ture Category: Malta Public Transport, for its investment in a state-of-the-art electric charging station.

Innovation Category: Active Ageing and Community Care (Silver-T service), for their innovative approach in integratin­g transport solutions with community care, particular­ly benefiting the elderly population.

Modal Shift Category: Project Aegle Foundation (sCOOL2walk do not meet the company’s commercial standards anymore.

“As a supermarke­t chain, we can play an important role in the fight against food waste, a topic very dear to us which we have already been addressing for many years with numerous iniproject), for its impactful initiative encouragin­g a shift towards more sustainabl­e modes of transport, especially among school-going children.

Sustainabi­lity Category: MaltaPost plc (One Delivery project), for their efforts in sustainabl­e delivery methods, significan­tly reducing carbon emissions and promoting green logistics.

Minister Aaron Farrugia said that this event marked a milestone in Malta’s journey towards a more sustainabl­e, efficient and inclusive transport sector. He extended his heartfelt congratula­tions to all winners and participan­ts for their tiatives,” comments Marie-Clare Church, Communicat­ion & CSR department Lidl Malta. “Thanks to our Food Saving Bag, we intend to promote more conscious consumptio­n and raise awareness among our customers who, in fact, have been able to grasp the spirit of the initiative and show their appreciati­on from the very beginning.”

The Food Saving Bags are handpicked daily by store staff after a careful selection of products and are placed inside a dedicated cart in the area behind the checkouts. The number of bags available at each store varies depending on the daily availabili­ty of suitable products. Each Food Saving Bag contains 4kg of fruits and vegetables and can be purchased at a discounted price of €3. For every bag purchased, €0.50 will be donated to Caritas Malta, a Maltese NGO providing food and essential services to people in need. invaluable contributi­ons, thanking all those who participat­ed and all those who attended for the very first edition of the Malta National Transport Awards.
