Malta Enterprise to brief companies on possible EU industrial chemicals restrictions

- Euaffairs@maltaenteprise.com

Discussions are currently underway regarding the adoption of a new restriction under REACH, a European regulation for the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. The overall objective is to restrict the manufacturing and sale of PFASs in the European Economic Area. PFAS is aa group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease and water which have negative implications on both the environment and human health.

Their phasing out may prove to be an extreme challenge due to their decades-long and widespread use. The identification of viable alternatives possibly can take years.

Potential restrictions may result in significant implications on the European industry. The supply of chemicals needs to be ensured to avoid market disruptions and significantly increased prices. A total ban on PFASs would result in the over-reliance on imports from outside of the EU. This will also cause several EU and local manufacturers potentially needing to reengineer their production processes, procure different equipment and use other materials.

An information session on 27th March 2024 at 8h30 at The Palace, Sliema is being organised by Malta Enterprise for industry and stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the upcoming revisions of the REACH regulation and to evaluate foreseeable impacts on the industry.

Stakeholders, industry, and policy experts are encouraged to attend the discussion. During the in-person event, an expert from the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) will address the participants.
