‘Sleeping Beauty’ live from The Royal Opera House

-

Celebrate 70 years of The Royal Ballet’s landmark production and enter an enchanted world of princesses, fairy godmothers and magical spells. Eden Cinemas will be showing a live satellite broadcast of the much loved classic The Sleeping Beauty on Tuesday, 28 February at 8pm.

A perennial delight and a muchloved classic, The Royal Ballet‘s The Sleeping Beauty combines the best of classical ballet, with all its charms and virtuosity, splendid music and talented dancers.

First choreographed to Tchaikovsky‘s great musical score by Marius Petipa in Russia in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty has wonderful ensembles, solos including the Rose Adage as Princess Aurora meets her suitors, and of course the concluding celebratory dances for the happy union of prince and princess. The Royal Ballet’s landmark staging was revived for the company’s 75th anniversary celebrations in 2006.

The designs by Oliver Messell, one of the greatest stage designers of the 20th century, were restored and updated for this production by Peter Farmer. The rich evocations of the baroque opulence of a royal court, the panoramic journey of the prince to the overgrown castle and the colourful characters in this famous fairytale make this Sleeping Beauty a spectacle like no other.

Be part of the global audience by viewing the Royal Ballet live broadcast for one night only. Tickets for the live broadcast are available at €18 for adults and €10 for children and under 16. This includes a complimentary glass of wine and complimentary parking at the Eden Leisure Car park. If you’re unable to attend the live show, an encore screening will be held on Sunday, 5 March at 3pm. Tickets for this are priced at €15 for adults and €10 for children, including free parking.

As a special addition to the event, ballerinas from Brigitte Gauci Borda School of Dance will be pirouetting through the cinema foyer dressed in The Sleeping Beauty ensemble prior to the screening. They will be performing a number from The Sleeping Beauty to warm the audience up for the Royal Ballet’s performance. A competition to win lots of exciting ballerina-related prizes will be running on both days prior to the screening.

The event is sponsored by Attard and Co., 35 South, Encore magazine, The Malta Arts Council and Waterbiscuit. Tickets may be purchased from the Eden Cinema box office or online at www.edencinemas.com.mt
