The real threat to democracy

It is becoming increasingly obvious that when blogger – and not journalist – Daphne Caruana Galizia decided to post the story, fed to her by a supposedly anonymous “source”, claiming that Dr Chris Cardona and his consultant, Dr Joe Gerada, were seen at a German brothel, she had overplayed her hand.

To post such a story on a government minister and his consultant without waiting to verify the credibility of the informer and his story, Caruana Galizia threw caution to the wind. She has proved that she is no journalist at all but a peddler of gutter politics.

Having followed Times Talk in which Minister Chris Cardona was interviewed by Bertrand Borg, I am now more than convinced that Daphne Caruana Galizia was fed a fake story – if the anonymous “source” truly existed. Dr Cardona has mentioned a number of things with which he could prove that both he and his consultant, had not been at FKK Acapulco as alleged by Caruana Galizia.

Of course, as expected, Simon Busuttil immediately jumped to defend Caruana Galizia in Parliament, and accused Dr Cardona of wanting to si- lence Caruana Galizia, as well as claiming that Dr Cardona’s legal action was “a threat to freedom of expression and democracy”. These words were uttered by the Leader of the Opposition whenever he and his colleagues and friends in the media are sued for libel. Surely, if the request for garnishee orders presented by Dr Chris Cardona were a “threat to democracy and freedom of expression”, as claimed by Simon Busuttil and Daphne Caruana Galizia, the court would not have accepted the request. Once such requests are legal, and the court found there was a basis for such a request, then the Leader of the Opposition and Daphne Caruana Galizia’s are only trying to dupe people

As regards the “threat to democracy”, which Simon Busuttil also says exists today in our country, that “threat” now has a name – Simon Busuttil – after the two shocking statements he made during the PN’s demonstration in Valletta. Especially when he said he would not be obeying the law on news websites!
