Duncan Micallef and Tiziana Carannante win top awards

Drag racer Duncan Micallef and ten-Pin bowler Tiziana Carannante won the top awards at yesterday’s Sport Malta Awards final evening held at the Mediterran­ean Conference Centre in Valletta.

Malta’s Under-21 football team was voted as the team of the year after their successful run in the european qualifiers.

The side’s coach Silvio Vella was selected as the coach of the year.

Football referee Esther Azzopardi, who recently announced her retirement, was voted as the official of the year.

The full list of winners at yesterday’s Sport Awards evening were as follows. Sportsman of the Year Micallef Duncan – Drag Racing Sportswoma­n of the Year Carannante Tiziana – Ten Pin Bowling Male Youth of the Year Plumpton Ben – Waterpolo Female Youth of the Year Pellicano Helene – Tennis Official of the Year Azzopardi Esther – Football Coach of the Year Vella Silvio - Football Team of the Year Football: Men’s U-21 national team

Other awards were given to Special Olympics athletes with Mark Agius winning the men’s category and Anne Marie Bugeja the women’s category

Joe Bajada won the award reserved for Gozitan officials/administra­tors.

The Badminton internatio­nal championsh­ips held in March last year in Malta was selected as the event of the year, with the Malta Badminton Associatio­n winning this award.

The People’s Choice Award was won by John Zammit, President of the Malta Cycling Federation, and founder of the BMX Associatio­n.

There were also speeches from Parliament­ary Secretary Chris Agius, Luciano Busuttil, Mark Cutajar and Charles Camenzuli, President of the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sports.

Charles Camenzuli who was recently elected as President of AIPS Europe, said that this will be his last event as President of Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sport.
