Heritage Malta to open Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples for today’s Festa Frawli

-

Heritage Malta will be opening the Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples in Mġarr at a reduced price during the annual Festa Frawli being held today.

Festa Frawli is a day-long event organised by the Mġarr Local Council which has now become a popular event in the Maltese calendar, marking the beginning of the strawberry season.

Ta’ Ħaġrat includes two wellpreserved prehistoric structures. The site was excavated between 1923 and 1926 with some other minor interventions in 1953 and in the 1960s. The larger of the two buildings dates from the earliest phases of megalithic construction – the Ġgantija phase (3600 – 3200 BC).

This structure has a monumen- tal doorway and facade which give the site two of its most aweinspiring and renowned characteristics. Other features include a bench, running along the facade’s length, as well as a courtyard, surrounded by a raised stone kerb. This space, accessible through the entrance corridor of the temple, provides access to three chambers through megalithic doorways.

The main doorway of this structure was restored in 1937 with the replacement of the door lintel in its original position. Ceramic material from both earlier and later periods was also found within the site indicating that the site was used both before and after the construction of the Temples.

During Festa Frawli, Heritage Malta will be taking the opportunity to encourage local and foreign audiences to visit Ta’ Haġrat Temples, part of UNESCO’s Megalithic Temples of Malta World Heritage Site, at the reduced price of €3. The site will be open between 9.00am and 4.00pm and tours will be given every hour starting at 9.30am with the last tour at 2.30pm. Tours will be given in Maltese and English alternatively with the first tour being given in Maltese. To ensure visitors enjoy a personalized tour of the site a maximum of 25 persons will be accepted for each tour.

Tickets can be purchased on the day from Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples.
