Maltese contingent leaves for San Marino GSSE
The Maltese contingent taking part in the Games for European Small States left Malta yesterday morning.
The contingent of around 120 athletes and officials arrived in San Marino in the afternoon. Early in the morning, they checked in at the airport, following which they were transferred by coach to Naxxar to cast their vote (those eligible) for the General Election.
Then it was back to the airport for the Air Malta flight.
MOC President, Julian Pace Bonello, is heading the contingent, while Chef de Mission is William Beck.
Earlier this month, Beck confirmed that Malta will be taking part in 12 disciplines which are Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Beach Volley, Boules (Raffa), Cycling, Judo, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.
The contingent comprises 88 athletes. This year will see Team Malta compete in Archery, Boules and Cycling which have replaced Golf and Gymnastics from the previous years. A number of coaches and medical officials will also be accompanying the athletes.
Technical Director for the 2017 GSSE Mario Micallef is confident that the Maltese contingent is well prepared for the Games and hopes that the medal tally from previous years will continue to increase from the 31 medals obtained in Iceland two years ago.
He says that the fact that Team Malta is represented in all the 12 disciplines highlights the MOC’s confidence in the preparation that the athletes and their respective federations have undergone throughout the past months.
Athlete Charlotte Wingfield will be the contingent’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony in the San Marino Stadium in Serravalle, tomorrow.
The Games will come to an end next Saturday 3 June.
