The Malta Independent on Sunday
Migration and its social, economic and political implications
The University of Malta’s Islands and Small States Institute is organising a seminar on Migration and its social, economic and political implications, on 4 October at the University of Malta, Gateway, Room 164, between 6 and 8 pm.
International migration and its economic and social implications have emerged as a major area of concern for the sending and receiving countries and an important area of interest in academic publications. Various issues are associated with migration including a number of benefits such as remittances to the families of the migrants in the sending country, increased incomes and social benefits for the migrants and an increase in the labour supply in the host country, with implications for economic growth and the sustainability of the pension schemes
There are also a number of downsides associated with migration including problems relating to the integration of immigrants, lowering of wage rates in the host country as a re- sult of competition for jobs and costs of providing welfare schemes to migrants. These disadvantages of migration were possible reasons why the majority of UK voters supported the Brexit option. The three speakers at this seminar will discuss these issues. There will also be time for questions and comments from the audience.
The speakers at the seminars will be Professor Russell King, University of Sussex, who will talk on What can Brexit teach us about migration?; Dr Mario T. Vassallo and Dr Jean Claude Cachia, University of Malta, who will talk on Domestic and European Response to Migration: Malta's moral dilemma and Raymond Facciol, University of Malta, who will talk on the Impact of Migration on Education and Schools. Attendance is free of charge but those wishing to attend are to inform Romina Carabott (ISSI) on email: islands@um.edu.mt or by phoning on 2340 2117, 2134 4879 by Monday, 2 October.
