Voomquest V2 championsh­ip gets underway at Mellieha because of the inclement weather

The first Voomquest V2 powerboat championsh­ip got off to an indifferen­t start yesterday as the venue had to be moved from Marfa to Mellieha in view of the inclement weather.

Three Maltese boats – Team Cutting Edge, Team Maria Galea Racing and Team Freccia Blu are representi­ng Malta. The other boats are from France (Team Marine Diffusion), Team Lethiec, also from France, and from Belgium (Team Atomic Grey). The first event produced an incident when one of the boats, that of Maria Galea Racing, seemed to have encountere­d some problems and overturned. Thankfully, there were no reports of any casualties. The third and final race is expected to be held today.

At the end of the first day of racing, Team Marine Diffusion are leading with 800 points. Team Lethiec follow on 600, Team Atomic&Grey and Team Cutting Edge are joint third on 225 points each.

Race 1 result: 1. Team Marine Diffusion (Dominique Martini and Jean Luc Martini) 400 points; 2. Team Lethiec (Yannick Lethiec and Claude Vaccari) 300 pts; 3. Team Cutting Edge (Steve Bezzina and Michael Abela). Team MG Powerboat Racing (Maria Galea and Mandy Islam) did not finish while Team Atomic&Grey retired.

Race 2 result: 1. Team Marine Diffusion 400 points; 2. Team Lethiec 300; 3. Team Atomic&Grey 225. Team Cutting Edge did not finish and Team MG Powerboat Racing did not start.
