Government Company Unlimited?

A good government is one that recognizes the all round development needs of its society within a reasonable period of time, extending from the present to the foreseeable future.

- Godfrey Farrugia

It enacts good laws that protect and responsibilise its people. These laws are in turn enforced directly and indirectly by promulgating a general climate of good governance, social justice and paramount respect for public interest.

A decent government does not create laws as a divergence, as a parliamentary entertainment soap opera, while simultaneously circumventing these same laws by exploiting pre-determined lacunae peppering the writs. Or even worse, creating institutions or hierarchies empowered to overrule the very same laws it creates, should these laws, by a freak of nature, actually succeed in protecting the national interest rather than that of the power hungry government/ lobby interest.

When politics loses its objective, which should be the upholding of the dignity of a person, as an individual and as a nation, and degenerates into an exercise in disjointed decisions designed to appeal to specific individuals, cohorts or lobbies, mayhem is bound to set in.

If a culture of corruption is nurtured concurrently, chaos will prevail.

Irrational behaviour by the powers that be, manifested in illogical decisions on different fronts, has become the order of engage in honest business in spite of the increasingly discouraging, heavy, politically loaded bureaucratic system? Yes, how can we, the students slaving at our studies to acquire an education that empowers us to be financially secure and independent in a meritocratic country? How do we survive this mess, and put our country back on the path of sustainable, rational, well-being generating growth?

There is only one way. There is one simple uncomplicated road out of this conundrum.

And it is not the way that simply thinking, judging, complaining can ever take us.

Thinking, analysing, concluding are a very good start, but definitely useless if those human activities are not turned into action.

Action: the magic solution to any problem. We need to speak up together. We need to act together. We need to protest together.

The powers that be can mow us down one by one with their army of 5,000 trolls (and counting) if we act alone, or in fragmented groups. But they cannot mow us all down if we speak in one voice, together as a proud nation that does not, and will not let a gang of thieves plunder, and dishonour its country further.

In 2013, when I put my doctor’s bag down and ventured innocently into the hyena infested political arena, my intention was to ensure that I leave my country much better than I found it.

Dr Joseph Muscat betrayed us all, myself included with a brilliant manifesto, a plan of action our country desperately needed, a roadmap which he proceeded to cold-bloodedly turn upside down.

But, we cannot just sit back and moan at the ultimate betrayal of everything we are and everything we have ever stood for.

We are fighting back. We will continue fighting back.

But we need all Maltese and Gozitans of good will to fight back too.

I can personally guarantee you that I will use what’s left of my life to reinstate good governance and fairness in our society.

I have a vision for my country.

I see a Malta and Gozo where their character, our identity is not only preserved but remains alive and nurtured, where everyone gets a fair opportunity to reach his or her potential in our own beautiful archipelago, where the vulnerable are supported not trampled underfoot and recycled into a statistic, in short I will fight for a country where respect and serene living become the order of the day again.
