HSBC-supported exhibition imagines water from a new lens

A three-year art project with an aim to cultivate an understanding of water conservation in young students and supported by HSBC Malta is now culminating with a public exhibition until Sunday 13 May at St James Cavalier in Valletta.

The ‘Imagine Water, Catch the Drop’ project was launched in Malta for three scholastic years 2015-2018. The exhibition was launched as part of Spazju Kreattiv programme and Valletta International Visual Arts (VIVA) festival. Entrance is free.

The initiative formed part of one of a number of projects run by the HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop and was run by France-based l’association École d’art au village (Edaav). The project was designed to engage artists, teachers, and students in a long-term and meaningful creative process while raising awareness of the importance of water to the Maltese islands. Students were encouraged to use a variety of media such as paint, photography, video, music, collage, or installations.

A total of 150 students were supervised by Edaav President Sébastien Cailleux and Maltese artist Luca Cauchi. The participating students came from four schools in Malta and Gozo: Għajnsielem Primary, Mater Boni Consilii in Paola, Ħandaq Middle, and Naxxar Primary.

Catch the Drop was originally designed to be rooted in Malta’s education system and inspire its 50,000 primary and secondary student population. However, this bottom-up educational approach was subsequently extended to include higher education institutes, local and business councils, government entities and NGOs, and international fora such as CHOGM and EU Presidency. It ran from 2013 to 2018. Since 2013, HSBC Malta has invested close to €1 million on water conservation projects in Malta.

Following the Valletta exhibition, where it was purposefully aligned with the Valletta 2018 activities, the art exhibition will run again at Cittadella Culture Centre at Victoria, Gozo, Spaces 1, 3, 5 under the title of ‘Imagine Water and Gozo goes art’ from 3 to 26 August 2018.
