Casa accuses Alfred Sant of ‘deceit’ or ‘confusion’ over old threat sent to Daphne Caruana Galizia

-

Nationalist Party MEP David Casa has accused Labour Party MEP Alfred Sant of being either “intentionally deceitful” or “confused” when he issued a statement about a Dutch journalist being in possession of an old threat sent to assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia post 2015.

In a statement issued yesterday morning, Sant said that a Dutch journalist had approached him in Brussels regarding the investment of Crane Currency in Malta and had shown him a threatening letter – in Maltese – sent to Daphne Caruana Galizia after the year 2015.

“This email is definitely not in the laptop deposited in the Courts of Law. How did this journalist come in possession of this email”, asked Sant during a debate with David Casa on TVM programme Xarabank on Friday.

For the sake of accuracy, it must be pointed out that Caruana Galizia’s laptop has not been handed over to the courts.

In a statement issued by his office, Sant was reported to have said that former PN leader Simon Busuttil’s clique is undermining Malta’s democratic institutions.

“Their strategy is to portray Malta as a Mafia state with a corrupt government that does not respect the rule of law. This same clique is providing foreign journalists with information that puts the Maltese and Gozitan people in a bad light.”

Sant said that the anti-patriotic behaviour of Busuttil’s clique is dangerous because it depicts all Maltese and Gozitans as corrupt and violent. “They are giving a very bad reputation to Malta.”

He said that this is negatively affecting economic activities in Malta such as financial services and iGaming. Busuttil’s clique’s attitude is also increasing the pressure against Malta and other EU member states that are trying to safeguard taxation sovereignty.

In reply, Head of PN Delegation David Casa stated: “During yesterday’s [Friday] live Xarabank debate, Alfred Sant made reference to his meeting with a journalist investigating Crane Currency, who showed him a threat from a De La Rue employee against Daphne Caruana Galizia. He stated that this was not in the laptop that was handed over to the police.”

The devious implication Alfred Sant was attempting to make was that the police would not know about this threat, Casa said.

“I have discovered the identity of the mysterious journalist who met Alfred Sant last week as part of his investigation into Crane Currency and have made contact with him. I have become aware of the top secret threat that was shared with Alfred Sant. You don’t need Daphne’s laptop to know about it, Dr Sant. Any device with an internet connection will do.”

The threat is public and was posted by Daphne herself on her blog. It can be found here: https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/20 12/08/de-la-rue-employee-james-vellaha-jorbotni-mal-bumber-u-l-lajksghandu-fox-ukoll/

“It is outrageous that the Labour Party has resorted to these cheap tricks to justify the train wreck that is the investigation into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination,” Casa said.
