Book Champion Schools initiative for World Book Day

On Tuesday, 8 May, the Literacy and Informatio­n Support Unit (Lisu) of the National Literacy Agency presented the Book Champion Schools awards at St Nicholas College Dingli Secondary School. This initiative formed part of the World Book Day celebratio­ns 2018. The Book Champion Schools awards were presented to 47 state and non-state primary, middle and secondary schools who actively promote books, reading and literacy. Winners in each category: gold, silver and bronze were presented with a certificat­e and a book voucher. Seven schools were awarded the Bronze award, 15 schools were awarded the Silver award and 25 schools were awarded the Gold awards. The National Sport School and the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School were among the prominent promoters of literacy.

Awards were also given to students from Year 7 to Year 11 who came first, second and third in the World Book Day competitio­ns organised by Lisu. The winners in each year group were presented with a certificat­e and a book voucher.

The students who came first in the World Book Day competitio­ns are as follows:

Year 7 – Maya Danielle Bugeja (St Clare College Pembroke Secondary School)

Year 8 – Timothy Cachia (St Clare College National Sport School)

Year 9 – Rebecca Poulton (St Dorothy’s Senior School, Żebbuġ)

Year 10 – Ann Cilia (Maria Reġina College Mosta Secondary School)

Year 11 – Venice Cassar (Bishop Conservato­ry Secondary School Victoria)
