Cambridge University´s Corpus Christi College Choir for Gozo Concert

-

The Gozo Cathedral will be the venue of a concert featuring the Corpus Christi College Choir from Cambridge University.

The concert, entitled Sing Joyfully Unto God, will be held on Tuesday, 3 July, at 8pm. Entrance is free of charge.

The concert is being organized by the Gaulitanus Choir, with whom the UK choir has an ongoing collaboration, and is one of the 2 concerts which will conclude the Gozitan choir´s artistic season.

Corpus Christi College, dating back to 1352, is one of 31 colleges which together form the University of Cambridge, one of the world’s leading academic institutions. The college choir sings three services each week in the college’s early nineteenth-century chapel, besides performing in festivals and numerous concerts during the year.

The choir tours each year, and in recent years performed in Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, France and Italy. Accompanied by organ scholar Paul Newton-Jackson, it is conducted by the college’s Director of Music, Robin Walker.

They perform a repertoire mainly based around the Anglican liturgy, but ranging from early polyphony to new works specially written for the choir. This will also be the case with the Gozo concert, where a cappella works by the great renaissance masters such as Tallis and Byrd will be juxtaposed with contempo- rary works, including works by top British composers Jonathan Dove and Judith Weir, as well as pieces written by choir members themselves. Crossover works, such as those by the acclaimed US choral group Pentatonix, will add flavour to the repertoire.

Reflecting the spirit of the collaboration between the Corpus Christi and the Gaulitanus Choir, the concert will be concluded by the two choirs joining forces for two immortal choral works: Stainer´s God So Loved the World and Faure´s Cantique de Jean Racine. These will be directed by the Gozitan choir´s founder-director and the evening´s artistic director, Colin Attard.
