Cendrillon: Cinderella in the Screaming Sixties

-

Have you ever thought about how Cinderella’s life story would be remembered had she lived in the Screaming Sixties?

On 28 and 30 June Malta’s National Theatre, Teatru Manoel, will produce the beautiful Cendrillon (Cinderella in French), making it the third opera on this year’s programme. Composed by the Maltese-born Nicolò Isouard in Paris back in 1810, Cendrillon enchants the audience with her kindness and as the traditional fairy tale goes, justice prevails.

Cinderella’s positive ending story is loved and appreciated by its worldwide audiences and to top it up, Teatru Manoel’s adaptation is giving a refreshing twist to the traditional tale. For the first time Cinderella is living in the Sixties, wearing retro clothing and singing high notes.

“2018 marks the bicentennial year from Isouard’s death and it is also the year wherein Valletta is designated as European Capital of Culture and therefore it was a natural conclusion to include Isouard’s most popular opera “Cendrillon” in the programme of the National Theatre,” explains Teatru Manoel’s Artistic Director Kenneth Zammit Tabona.

This performance will be the first of its kind and it’s not to be missed.

Book your tickets from Teatru Manoel’s website or call the Booking Office on 21246389. A press launch was organised last Thursday at Teatru Manoel’s auditorium, gathering all the people involved in Cendrillon’s creation and development, including its cast; French sponsors; the French Embassy; Teatru Manoel’s Management Team; the Ministry for Justice; Culture and Local Government’s officials responsible and the Minister for Justice Owen Bonnici.

Teatru Manoel is committed to bringing the highest standard of performances on our Maltese shores, which is why Malta’s National Theatre is continuously investing in performances highlighting Maltese talent.

Malta’s very own soprano Claire Debono will be performing as Cendrillon and since Isouard’s success flourished in Paris, this particular performance naturally involved the collaboration of a French consortium, who generously sponsored the opera for the audience in Malta to cherish.

Teatru Manoel thanks the following sponsors: Fondation Gandur pour l’Art; Mr and Mrs Eric Bertrand; Mr and Mrs JeanConrad Hottinguer; Mr and Mrs Jean-Luc Chalmin; and the Ambassade de France.
