MAPFRE Middlesea employees have attended physical and mental health courses as part of the company’s development programme.

The Mental Health First Aid Course, delivered by Richmond Foundation Malta, prepared participants to provide first aid to someone facing a mental health issue or crisis. Instructors explained what one needs to do when faced with individuals having suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, a post-traumatic event crisis, passing through severe psychotic state or suffering the effects of alcohol or drug use. The company also offers free and confidential counselling at Richmond Foundation for all its staff.

Employees also attended a First Aid Course in collaboration with St John’s Rescue Corps. During the sessions, employees were taught how to manage an incident, carry out a preliminary sur- vey, place a victim in the recovery position and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

A representative of St John’s Rescue Corps explained how first-aiders should help someone suffering from head injuries, a heart attack, bleeding, burns, choking or fainting. The course also outlined the handling of soft tissue injuries, jellyfish stings and sea sickness.

In addition to the first aid courses, all employees attended a health and safety information session, which was held inhouse, and regular fire drills are also held within the company.

Throughout the year, MAPFRE Middlesea also organises Fire Fighting courses and a substantial number of employees are qualified. The company endorses the work carried out by St John’s Rescue Corps and also supports it financially.
