Shooters Brian Galea and Eleonor Bezzina claim top awards

Shooters Brian Galea and Eleonor Bezzina won the male and female awards for the year 2018, in yesterday’s 59th edition of the Malta Sports Awards.

Shooting was the major sport yesterday with the ISSF Shooting World Cup winning the event of the year award.

Waterpolo chaco Karl Izzo won the coach of the year award and Anna Calleja won the official of the year award for her role in the preparatio­n of the Malta Special Olympics team.

Triple Iron Man athlete Fabio Spiteri won the People’s choice award and the Men’s national Basketball team won the team of the year award.

The awards were won as follows: Male athlete of the year: Brian Galea (Shooting)

Female athlete of the year: Eleonor Bezzina (Target Shooting) People’s choice award: Fabio Spiteri (Triple Iron Man)

Official of the year award: Anna Calleja (Special Olympics)

Event of the year: The ISSF Shooting World Cup held at the Malta Shooting Sport Federation new shooting range at Ta’ Kandja Coach of the year: (Waterpolo) Karl Izzo Team of the year: Men’s Basketball national team

Male Youth athlete of the year for the John Debattista award: Kijan Sultana (Squash)

Female Youth athlete of the year award: Sara Xuereb (Ten Pin Bowling) Male Special Olympic athlete: Matthew Bugeja Female Special Olympic athlete: Fiona Ellul Bonici
