Aqra fis-Sajf 2019 summer reading campaign in its fifth year

For the fifth consecutiv­e year, the National Literacy Agency will be organising the Aqra fis-Sajf summer reading campaign to encourage children to continue reading during the summer months. This campaign is organised in order to sustain the abilities and skills pupils acquired throughout the scholastic year.

In order to celebrate five years of summer reading campaigns, the National Literacy Agency will be encouragin­g children to take part in the Aqra fis-Sajf 2019 – Summer reading challenge. The Agency reading animators will be disseminat­ing a specially designed booklet made up of five fun and educationa­l challenges for pupils. Once completed, booklets may be submitted to the National Literacy Agency. This competitio­n is open for children aged between 5 and 16 and all submission­s have to be made by not later than Friday, 30 August. These booklets are going to be disseminat­ed in all Skolasajf centres. Booklets may also be obtained from public libraries or the National Literacy Agency in Hamrun.

Daily Aqra fis-Sajf reading sessions, in Maltese and English, will be delivered by reading animators that have been trained by the National Literacy Agency. These reading for fun sessions will be held in 51 Skolasajf centres. Furthermor­e, the Agency will continue offering the Aqra Miegħi/ Read with Me and Seħer l-Istejjer/ The Magic of Stories programmes in public libraries and spaces throughout summer.

The NLA will be offering the Klabbsajf guided reading programme to those students that attended the Nwar family literacy programme during this scholastic year. For the first time, the Surf (Summer Reading Fun) literacy programme will be offered by the Agency to children who have received Reading Recovery during this scholastic year. Pupils attending Skolasajf will be given the opportunit­y to participat­e in the Footballer­s Read and Write Summer programme. During summer, the National Literacy Agency will also be offering the Għidli Storja/ Tell Me a Story summer programme where students will have an exciting opportunit­y to enjoy listening to tales and legends in Maltese and/or English.
