● Announces glass bottle night collection schedule from bars and restaurants

-

The Nirriċikla għall-Istrina nationwide campaign by GreenPak Coop Society Ltd, urging households, schools, local councils, companies and social clubs to collect plastic bottle caps for l- Istrina, has raised €21,000 which has been presented to the Malta Community Chest Fund. The donation was presented to President Dr George Vella by GreenPak Coop Society CEO Ing Mario Schembri at San Anton Palace in Attard.

The donation is in return for the number of plastic bottle caps that were collected for recycling during the 2019 campaign, and which would have otherwise ended in Malta’s landfill.

Dr Vella said: “This initiative has two key objectives: to educate children regarding the protection of the environment and to make them aware of charitable causes. I thank GreenPak for their yearly commitment to collecting plastic bottle caps from schools and various other entities, while I’m also grateful for their donation to L-Istrina.”

Meanwhile, part of its recycling commitment, GreenPak has announced its daily night service schedule for the collection of empty glass bottles from bars and restaurants in selected localities. This service has been extended to include Paceville and the St George’s Bay area.

The free daily service is being resumed during the festive period for bars and restaurants situated along the seafront in Gzira from Manoel Island, passing through The Strand, Qui-SiSana, Tower Road, Balluta Bay, Spinola Hill in St Julians and up St Andrew’s Road to St Augustine Street to St George’s Bay and around the various streets in Paceville. The service collects only empty glass bottles and jars.

The daily service began on Saturday, 21 December and will end on Friday, 2nd January. It is run in collaboration with the local councils of Gzira, Sliema and St Julian’s, together with the Cleaning Services Department.

“We operate our own glass collections seven days a week from 1.00am during this busy as period and the service is being extended to include entertaining establishments in Paceville and St George’s Bay,” said Ing Mario Schembri.

GreenPak adapts its glass bottle collections according to busier periods, such as at Christmas and during the summer months. From Saturday, 4 January, the service will continue at weekends (Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays) only.

GreenPak Cooperative Society, which runs the largest waste recovery system in Malta, operates the monthly service of its doorto-door glass collection from households and commercial outlets on the first Friday of the month. In Gozo, the same glass collection service is operated every first Thursday of the month. Nirricikla għallIstrina and the Glass Collection are two of several campaigns undertaken by GreenPak to promote recycling, have a positive impact on the environment and help reduce waste from landfill sites.
