Transport Malta donates an electric van to the Office of the President and MCCFF
President George Vella and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg attended the donation of a wheelchair-accessible electric van from Transport Malta to be used by the Office of the President and the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. Transport Malta management and the MCCFF management also attended this event.
President Vella praised the donation made by Transport Malta and said that the van will not only be used to transport persons with disability, but also it is a vehicle that will not pollute the environment as it an electric car. He expressed the intention that the vehicle will be used not just for the MCCFF patients, as the van can also be lent to other non-government organisations for transportation purposes.
Minister Borg said: “Social contribution is a priority for government and its entities. Today we can see positive actions from two angles – the social angle with this accessible van, which will now be available for this Foundation that does so much good, even for use in urgent cases, and from the environmental angle, as the van which is electric, will not have a negative impact on air quality. Government is carrying out a lot of work towards a change in transport culture.”
He made reference to the launch of a €3.5m investment in grants a few weeks ago, with €1.6m among these dedicated to electro-mobility. These grants are also available to registered NGOs. The exemption from registration tax and road licence for the first five years still applies. Minister Borg also said that in the meantime government continues to invest in charging infrastructure, so that people who are interested in buying these vehicles can have more facilities. He thanked President Vella and the MCCFF for their social work while commending Transport Malta for this noble gesture.
