New Master of Science in Surgical Skills
The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Malta and Barts Cancer Institute of Queen Mary University of London are offering a new joint Master of Science Programme in October. The New Master of Science in Surgical Skills is aimed at Surgical Trainees and MD/MBBS graduates and Allied Health Professionals. No classification and experience are required.
This programme has two key aims:
• To provide trainee specialising in Surgery or Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a safe environment in which to develop the practical skills required to fast-track their surgical training and prepare them for their surgical career; and
• To provide a valuable opportunity to understand the basics of research methodology with a view to encourage more doctors to become clinical scientists.
Although it is being envisaged that students will follow the entire programme of studies leading to the award of the MSc degree (90ECTS), students also have the possibility to be awarded a Post-Graduate Diploma in Surgical Skills provided that they have obtained 60ECTS. If a student obtains 30ECTS he/she has the possibility to be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Surgical Skills.
The rationale for this programme is to offer new curriculum of technology-enhanced learning as a more flexible mode of study, allowing the programme to be studied alongside surgical training for local and international students.
Although the focus of the programme is to develop surgical skills through clinical simulated practice, students are also trained in conducting research and writing up a dissertation.
Applications for October are now open. For more details visit www.um.edu.mt/study/requestinfo
