Inter win seven-goal San Siro thriller

-

It was the return of Pazza Inter, as they scored two goals in two minutes to beat Fiorentina 4-3 after trailing 3-2 in a spectacular sevengoal San Siro thriller.

It was a shock start for Inter’s defence, who were all at sea and waiting for an offside flag that never came. Giacomo Bonaventura and Christian Kouame were allowed so much time and space to complete a double give-and-go on the edge of the six-yard box, evading the offside flag for Kouame’s tap-in.

Just as Fiorentina seemed set to waltz into the half-time break a goal up, they were naively caught out on the counter-attack, with Lautaro Martinez blasting in from the edge of the area to equalise.

Lautaro was responsible for the turnaround too, as he wrestled away from Amrabat and managed to get his shot away from a tricky angle, causing Federico Ceccherini to panic and prod it into his own net.

However, Fiorentina got back on level terms with a well-worked counter-attack of their own. Castrovilli started it in midfield and finished it too, completing his run by meeting the Ribery slide-rule pass to drill into the far bottom corner.

Perisic fired a promising opportunity over the bar, but the Viola turned the game around completely to lead 3-2. It was again Ribery who proved inspirational with a perfect pass for Chiesa, cutting out the entire Inter defence to send him clear, and the Italian lobbed on-rushing Handanovic.

However, those errors from his teammates proved very costly indeed, as Inter had another two twists in the tale. First, Radja Nainggolan’s ball over the top found Hakimi for a cushioned knock-down that Lukaku only had to tap in for 3-3.

Moments later, Alexis Sanchez’s in-swinging cross on a short corner found Danilo D’Ambrosio’s header at the back post, getting in front of Vlahovic for 4-3.

Napoli vs Genoa delayed after Perin positive for virus

Genoa's Serie A match at Napoli has been delayed for a few hours after goalkeeper Mattia Perin tested positive for the coronavirus.

The match on Sunday was scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. local time but will start three hours later.

Genoa announced Perin's test result on Saturday. The players and staff underwent further tests and the results will be known later.

That means the team will fly to Naples on Sunday morning instead of Saturday night as originally planned.

Fernandes' late penalty earns Man United 3-2 win at Brighton

Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 10th minute of stoppage time with the last kick of a wild Premier League game to earn Manchester United a 3-2 win over Brighton, which had earlier scored in added-on time and also hit the goal frame on five occasions on Saturday.

United was awarded a spot kick after the referee saw on the pitchside monitor that Harry Maguire's header deflected off the outstretched hand of Brighton striker Neal Maupay before being cleared off the line.

Despite the full-time whistle having already been blown, Fernandes was allowed to take a penalty and the Portugal playmaker found the corner of the net to score the latest Premier League goal since 2011 and secure a first win of the campaign for United.

Even Fernandes accepted it was fortunate.

In the last of the allotted five minutes of second-half stoppage time, Solly March — one of the players to have previously hit the goal frame — headed home at the far post for a goal that looked like sealing a point for the hosts.

Earlier, Leandro Trossard struck both posts in the opening 21 minutes before smashing a shot against the bar in the second half.

With Adam Webster heading against the bar and March striking a shot against the post, the Premier League's official statistics supplier, Opta, said it was the first time a team had struck the goal frame five times in a match since the company started compiling data in 2003-04.

Brighton went ahead in the 40th minute when Maupay converted a cheeky "Panenka" penalty after Fernandes brought down Tariq Lamptey.

United equalized three minutes later via an own-goal by Lewis Dunk, who inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after Nemanja Matic pulled the ball back across the face of goal at a free kick.

Brighton was denied a penalty at the start of the second half after Paul Pogba was initially adjudged to have clipped the legs of Aaron Connolly.

The referee changed his mind after viewing the incident on the pitchside monitor and booked Connolly.

Then United went ahead through Marcus Rashford, who cut in from the left after being played in behind the Brighton defense, delivered two shimmies, before getting the ball back on his left foot and rifling in a shot that deflected into the top corner in the 55th minute.

Rennes moves top of French league in style with 3-0 win

Unbeaten Rennes moved to the top of the French league in style with two spectacular goals in downing rival Saint-Étienne 3-0 on Saturday.

Saint-Étienne needed only a draw to go first on goal difference but fell behind in the 33rd minute when center half Nayef Aguerd headed in Benjamin Bourigeaud's corner.

Winger Romain Del Castillo set up striker Serhou Guirassy for an expert scissor kick in the 52nd, and forward Adrien Hunou completed the scoring in the 89th with a superb lob after latching onto Raphinha's pass.

Rennes leads Lille by two points in the fifth round.

Later Saturday, Marseille was hosting Metz at Stade Vélodrome.

Dortmund slumps to 2-0 Bundesliga defeat in Augsburg

One week after its young attacking stars impressed in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Augsburg.

Gio Reyna, Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham grabbed the headlines in beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 in the opening round, but were frustrated by a stubborn defense marshaled by Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz on Saturday.

Dortmund dominated the first half with eight efforts on target, but Felix Uduokhai scored with Augsburg's only chance of the half, heading home a free kick from close range in the 40th minute.

Former Schalke player Daniel Caligiuri doubled the lead in the 54th, holding off Thomas Meunier's challenge before shooting past Dortmund 'keeper Roman Bürki.

Dortmund coach Lucien Favre sent on Marco Reus and Julian Brandt with half an hour to play, to little effect. The 18-year-old Brazilian Reinier followed for his Bundesliga debut in the 69th, but he couldn't lift the side either.

"We had nearly 80% ball possession, but sometimes that doesn't bring much," Favre said.

Gikiewicz denied Mats Hummels, then Haaland late on, as Augsburg claimed its second win in two games.

Gikiewicz's former side, Union Berlin, salvaged a 1-1 draw at Gladbach thanks to Nico Schlotterbeck's late equalizer. Marcus Thuram scored with a deflected header for Gladbach in the 56th.

SCHALKE MISERY CONTINUES

Schalke's latest bid to end a 17game run without a win ended in another defeat, with Niclas Füllkrug scoring a hat trick in Werder Bremen's 3-1 win in Gelsenkirchen.

Schalke defender Ozan Kabak was sent off late for a second yellow card, but the home side's troubles started long before, with Füllkrug opening the scoring in the 22nd, set up by American forward Josh Sargent.
