Sirens and Tarxien share four goals

- SIMON FARRUGIA

Sirens returned to Premier League action after practically a month of inactivity when they faced Tarxien Rainbows in the only match of the weekend which was rescheduled in the middle of the National team’s preparation.

The match produced four goals with Tarxien saving a point in the last part of the match. For the St Paul’s side this was the second point of the campaign.

Sirens were forced to go into mandatory quarantine at the beginning of the month of October after a number of positive COVID-19 cases.

Tarxien were coming from a 50 drubbing against Gudja United with the team hit by a wave of inconsistency.

Daniel Zerafa and Luke Sciberras were both sidelined because of injury.

Tarxien took the lead as early as the 3rd minute when off a Da Silva Conceicao cross from the left flank in came Vito Plut who rifled the ball home.

Sirens responded on fifteen minutes through a Lucas Menezes diagonal shot which just missed the target.

Minutes later a Samba Tounkara cross found Maia Da Silva with his header being saved by the Tarxien goalkeeper.

On the other end David Cassar was on the alert when midway through the first half he saved on fierce Da Silva Conceicao drive.

The latter stages of the first half were dominated by the St Paul’s Bay outfit who drew level in the 38th minute.

An Espindola free kick caused havoc in the opposing area with the ball ending in Maia Da

Silva’s direction and the latter slotted the ball into the net.

And just on the stroke of half time Sirens took the lead when off an Agius corner a Maia Da Silva header beat Fernandes all ends up.

Tarxien started the second half brightly and after just one minute they hit the woodwork through Debono.

And on 50 minutes Cassar saved with some difficulty a Plut header following a Brandon Muscat corner.

The Rainbows kept piling on the pressure and just past the hour mark Cassar came once again at his team’s rescue saving once again on Plut. On the other end in a rare Sirens attack Domoraud tested Fernandes who turned his shot onto a corner.

Eight minutes from the end of the match and Tarxien saved the match. It was a Matthew Spiteri cross which found Vito Plut whose shot beat Cassar.
