Those who love the sea and are also passionate about history will surely enjoy Heritage Malta’s Fortifications Harbour Cruise on Wednesday, 14 July.

Participants will be able to explore the various creeks around the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett, such as French Creek, Marsa Creek and the Lazaretto, while admiring the fortifications dotting the area, built by the Knights of St John many centuries ago and by the British before and during World War II. These include the oldest fortification within the Grand Harbour, namely Fort St Angelo.

Other fortifications along the cruise’s itinerary are Fort St Elmo, Fort Ricasoli, Fort Manoel and Fort Tigne. Furthermore, the fortification lines of Valletta and Floriana will provide a unique case study to see and understand the anatomy of bastioned fortifications. The British touch to these fortifications between 1800 and 1979 will be explained as well.

Historical information during the tour will be provided by Matthew Balzan, principal curator – Fortifications within Heritage Malta.

The cruise boat will set sail from Sliema Ferries (Luzzu Cruises Point) at 6.30pm. Ticket holders are to be at the jetty at least half an hour before, since all necessary precautions must be taken in order to comply with Covid-19 regulations issued by the health authorities. The cruise will be 90 minutes long.

Ticket prices are as follows: Adults pay €17, senior citizens and students pay €15, children and Heritage Malta members pay €10. Heritage Malta members will be asked to present their Heritage Malta membership card.
