Guardiola's fears realised as City drop more points in EPL

-

Manchester City's fans cannot say they weren't warned.

Pep Guardiola incurred the wrath of some City fans when he urged "more people" to attend the home match against Southampton in the English Premier League on Saturday than had come for the Champions League win over Leipzig in midweek.

The short turnaround between games and Southampton's highenergy approach clearly concerned Guardiola and he was proved right, with City toiling to a 0-0 draw at Etihad Stadium to drop points for the second time in five games of its title defense. City lost to Tottenham in the opening round.

There was a near-capacity crowd for the game — compared to an attendance of 38,062 inside the 55,000-seater Etihad against Leipzig — and the City fans gave plenty of encouragement to their team while apparently showing no ill-feeling toward Guardiola after his comments.

Liverpool faced the same turnaround as City, hosting Crystal Palace at Anfield less than 72 hours after Jurgen Klopp's side beat AC Milan there in the Champions League on Wednesday. There were no such problems for the Reds in a 3-0 win secured by goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita.

It was Mane's 100th goal for Liverpool in all competitions, in his 224th appearance.

After losing its opening three games, Arsenal made it back-toback wins by beating Burnley 10 thanks to Martin Odegaard's curling free kick. There were also wins for Norwich and Brentford, while Aston Villa hosted Everton in the late game.

Lewandowski scores again as Bayern Munich rout Bochum 7-0

There were eight goals across four Saturday afternoon games in the Bundesliga. Bayern Munich scored seven of them.

There was a familiar face among the goal-scorers, too.

Robert Lewandowski scored yet again in Bayern's 7-0 rout of promoted Bochum.

Lewandowski stretched his scoring run to 19 consecutive games across all competitions for Bayern. The Poland star's second half goal also ensured he became the first Bundesliga player to score in 13 consecutive home games.

Bayern was already confident after starting the Champions League on Tuesday beating Barcelona 3-0, while Bochum arrived in Munich after two league defeats.

The visitors made a solid start until Leroy Sané opened the scoring with a brilliant free kick in the 17th minute. It was Bayern's first shot on target.

Sané set up Joshua Kimmich in the 27th and Serge Gnabry picked the far corner for Bayern's third in the 32nd.

An own goal from Vasilios Lampropoulos completed a first half to forget for Bochum – though history showed an improbable comeback was possible.

The clubs also met in the Bundesliga 45 years ago to the day, when Bochum – then playing at home – was four goals up against Bayern at halftime. Bayern fought back in the second half to win 6-5 with future club president Uli Hoeneß scoring the winner in the 89th.

Lewandowski has his own history to write, however. The Poland striker made it 5-0 in the 61st to extend his club-record scoring run. He has scored in every game since Feb. 15.

Kimmich got his second goal four minutes later and substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting made it 7-0 in the 79th.

It could have been worse for Bochum. Thomas Müller thought he made it 8-0 but his goal was ruled out through VAR for offside.

Goretzka, now an important player for Germany, stood out with his excellent performances for Bochum in 2012-13 before he joined Schalke.

Elsewhere, Florian Niederlechner's late goal gave Augsburg a 1-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach -– the home team's first league win of the season.

Mainz drew with Freiburg 0-0 and it also ended scoreless between Arminia Bielefeld and Hoffenheim.

Leipzig was playing in Cologne late.

No Lukaku, no Conte and no problem for Inter in 6-1 rout

Even without Romelu Lukaku and Antonio Conte, Inter Milan seems intent on successfully defending its Serie A title.

The Nerazzurri completely overwhelmed visiting Bologna 61 on Saturday to extend their unbeaten start to the Italian league.

Substitute Edin Džeko scored two late goals after Lautaro Martinez, Milan Skriniar, Nicolò Barella and Matias Vecino gave the hosts a four-goal cushion.

Arthur Theate pulled one back for Bologna four minutes from time.

The victory provided some welcome relief following two frustrating performances for Inter: A draw at Sampdoria last weekend and a loss at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Inter moved atop the standings, one point above Roma, AC Milan, Napoli — which are yet to play this weekend — and Fiorentina, which won at Genoa 2-1 earlier.

There had been concern about Inter's status after Conte surprisingly left the team in May shortly after leading the club to its first Italian league title in more than a decade.

Conte was openly concerned about the finances of Inter's Chinese owners and his lack of input in the transfer market, and his worries were confirmed when Lukaku was sold to Chelsea in August for a reported $135 million, a record transfer fee for the European champions.

Lukaku scored 64 goals in 95 matches across all competitions in his two seasons at Inter.

But under new coach Simone Inzaghi, Inter has had no trouble so far making up for losing Lukaku's goals.

With 15 goals scored in four matches, Inter has the most productive attack in the league.

Lautaro started things off against Bologna by redirecting a cross from Denzel Dumfries six minutes in at the San Siro for his fourth goal in as many matches.

Skriniar then rose uncontested to meet a corner with an on-target header on the half-hour mark and Barella concluded another devastating counterattack four minutes later.

After the break, Vecino scored with a tap-in then Džeko scored through the goalkeeper's legs for his first and fired in from a sharp angle for his second.

Bilbao holds Atlético to 0-0; Falcao nets in Rayo debut

Ten-man Atlético Madrid was held to a second straight scoreless draw at home on Saturday after its talented attack was again stymied by Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish league.

With Antoine Griezmann joining Luis Suárez, Ángel Correa, Yannick Carrasco and João Félix, coach Diego Simeone has his deepest well of attacking talent to draw on since taking over the team a decade ago.

But the defensive-minded Argentine has so far failed to get his attack to click. Atlético was also held to 0-0 by Porto at home in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, and Atlético has not scored more than two goals in any of its six games across all competitions this season.

Midfielder Marcos Llorente went closest for Atlético when his 75th-minute shot from outside the area hit the post.

Three minutes later, Atlético was left a man down when Félix earned back-to-back yellow cards. The referee first booked him for swatting a defender who was clinging to his jersey from behind. Félix, who was not looking at the player when his hand impacted his face, got a quick second booking when he vehemently protested.

Bilbao almost took advantage of the numerical superiority, but substitute Asier Villalibre wasted a perfect opportunity to grab an injury-time winner when he shot high with only goalkeeper Jan Olbak to beat from close.

The Basque Country club and Atlético both remained undefeated through five rounds.

Griezmann made his first start since returning to Atlético on loan from Barcelona. But the France forward's only scoring chance came in the opening minutes when he flicked a cross by Llorente high and wide. He was substituted early in the second half.
