Xjenza Online publishes its ninth volume

- CHLOÉ VIALA

The scientific journal Xjenza Online has released a new volume. Three articles have been written by professionals in the science field to explore three themes.

Rebecca-Maria Scerri and Joseph Borg authored on the Influence of Desalination Plant Effluent on Shore Macroinvertebrate Assemblages. This is a process by which water is separated into two components: water for human consumption, industry and crop irrigation, among others, and water with a high concentration of salts. Seawater desalination is considered a promising alternative to water extraction, as it does not exploit natural sources of fresh water and produces high quality water that can be supplied continuously. Therefore, this method can bypass the challenges of rapid global population growth, misuse of water resources and the effects of climate change. These all contribute to the issue of global water scarcity.

Adrian Theuma and Kevin Abela have overseen Exposition of the GRAS Method. This is a mathematical formula which allows for balancing and updating of Input-Output tables and Social Accounting Matrices (SAMs) and any other matrix, with positive and negative entries. The GRAS algorithm provided is applied on the Macro SAM for Malta by researchers, students and statisticians. Authors highlighted new additional mathematical assumptions invoked by the GRAS method.

Brandon Saliba, Dominic Cortis and Omar Madhloom drafted the Insurance, Risk Management and Youth Soccer Academies: A Maltese casestudy. Through an empirical study, conducted across all 47 youth academies in Malta, interviews conducted with the official national sports organisation and an insurance broker who introduced the first and unique insurance policy targeted for youth soccer academies in Malta, they analysed how risk management can be applied as part of a best practice management system in sports organisations. Xjenza Online (www.xjenza.org) is a peer-reviewed open access in electronic format international science journal of the Malta Chamber of Scientists. The Malta Chamber of Scientists

(mcs.org.mt) is a learned society and organisation of professionals, academics, teachers and students involved in the field of science and act as a hub for the discussion and exchange of innovative ideas. The first printed issue of the journal was published in 1996 and the current editor-in-chief is Prof. Cristiana Sebu. Its scope encompasses research articles, original research reports, reviews, short communications and scientific commentaries in all applied and theoretical aspect of science.
