Turin through the lens

-

‘Turin through the lens – A journey through colours, shapes and timeless emotions’ – this is the title of the photography project of Year 11 Savio College students that is currently being exhibited at Palazzo Ferreria, Valletta. The photos originate from an educational experience which started three years ago in Year 9 and reached a climax last October, when students of Applied Photography visited the charming region of Piedmont. This opportunity opened up the selections of new scenarios, landscapes, architectural features and historical artifacts.

It won’t take much for visitors to comprehend that the techniques learned in the photography classes made it possible for them to seal and make eternal what they have seen and experienced from the eye of a photographer. This is what Mr Christopher Azzopardi, Photography teacher, has shared with us vis-à-vis this unique experience.

During the official opening on Monday 23rd January, Fr Jeremy Vella sdb, Head of School at Savio College said that through these photos the panoramas which students have seen will remain vivid in the memory and the ancient figures of the Egyptian mummies have been brought back to life. Students were awe-struck by the majestic Alps and their surroundings and fascinated by the grand palaces of the first capital city of Italy that remind us of our noble identity as Europeans. Following five years at Savio College, students also touched ground with the land of origin of John Bosco which has given birth to a vast movement of the Salesians who work worldwide with and for the young.

The emotions evoked through these pictures testify that these are not mere material objects. Their value goes beyond. These photographs have a story to narrate which touches the heart of all those who see them.

During the opening speech, Minister Clayton Bartolo recalled the fond memories as a student at Savio College and how he still treasures the holistic education he received from the Salesian community and educators. Minister Bartolo praised students for their talents and abilities. He invited them to keep capturing particular landscapes and patterns through the art of photography while learning how to live the present moment. At the end of his speech, the minister expressed his satisfaction in having this opportunity to support this educational initiative that will most certainly remain imprinted in the memory of these youngsters and their families.

The exhibition will be open for the public from 9AM to 7PM till Tuesday 31st January at Palazzo Ferreria, Valletta. Visitors are invited to leave a comment on the visitors’ book available at the exhibition.
