Marco Odermatt leads World Cup giant slalom after the first run as he seeks 10th win in a row

-

Marco Odermatt closed in on what would be a 10th consecu‐ tive World Cup giant slalom vic‐ tory, leading after the first run Saturday at Tahoe Palisades.

Shifting his balance smoothly and effectively under a clear sky, Odermatt finished the first leg in 1 minute, 6.48 seconds. That put the Swiss star 0.15 seconds ahead of Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen, and 0.78 in front of American River Radamus head‐ ing into the second run sched‐ uled for later in the day.

Only one other ski racer was within a second of Odermatt, who is the reigning Olympic and world champion in the giant slalom: Croatia's Filip Zubcic, who was 0.87 off the pace.

Odermatt entered Saturday having won all six GS races this season, adding to the three‐event streak with which he closed out last season.

Odermatt has been dominant and entered the weekend lead‐ ing the World Cup overall stand‐ ings, along with the giant slalom, super‐G and downhill.

Heavy snow forces cancellation of women's World Cup super‑G at Val di Fassa

Heavy snow forced the cancel‐ lation of a women's World Cup super‐G on Saturday in Val di

Fassa.

There is another super‐G scheduled for Sunday and race organizers are hopeful it can go ahead as planned.

"Due to the large amount of snow from the last 24 hours today's Super G in Val di Fassa had been canceled," the Interna‐ tional Ski Federation said on X, formerly Twitter. "The work on the hill will continue in order to be ready for tomorrow."

It was the sixth women's speed race canceled this season.

A women's super‐G and down‐ hill were lost last month in Garmisch‐Partenkirchen, Ger‐ many, because of warm temper‐ atures and poor snow conditions.

Heavy snowfall also forced the cancellation of a super‐G in St. Moritz in December, while the opening two speed races of the season at the Matterhorn moun‐ tain on the Swiss‐Italian border were lost to heavy snow and strong winds.

Lara Gut‐Behrami leads the super‐G standings with a slender five‐point advantage over Cor‐ nelia Huetter.

The Swiss skier also leads in the giant slalom and downhill as well as overall, having overtaken Mikaela Shiffrin earlier this month with the American star out injured.
