Man City beats Chelsea with late Silva goal to make FA Cup final

-

Bernardo Silva fired Manches‐ ter City into the FA Cup final after they beat Chelsea 1‐0 at Wembley on Saturday.

The Portuguese playmaker's 84th‐minute goal ensured City maintained its pursuit of back‐ to‐back domestic doubles in the week when its Champions League defense was ended by Real Madrid.

Kevin De Bruyne's cross from the left was converted by Silva at the far post via a deflection from Chelsea defender Marc Cu‐ curella.

Chelsea had chances to take the lead, the best of them missed by Nicolas Jackson.

Manchester United meets Coventry in the other semifinal on Sunday. The final is on May 25.

RELEGATION BATTLE

Burnley's hopes of survival were boosted by routing last‐ placed Sheffield United 4‐1.

Vincent Kompany's team is putting together a late‐season bid to avoid the drop with only one loss in seven in the league. Burnley is within three points of safety.

The win at Bramall Lane pushed Sheffield United closer to relegation, 10 points from safety with five games to go.

First‐half goals from Jacob Bruun Larsen and Lorenz As‐ signon put Burnley in control by the break. Gustavo Hamer briefly gave the home fans hope of a fightback before Lyle Foster and Johann Berg Gudmundsson sealed Burnley's fifth win of the campaign.

A good day for Burnley was made even better as relegation rival Luton was hammered at home by Brentford 5‐1.

Luton, in 18th, had the chance to move out of the bottom three with a win, but is just two points ahead of Burnley in 19th.

Yoane Wissa struck twice for Brentford, which moved 10 points clear of the drop zone.

BAYERN BEAT UNION 5‑1

Harry Kane scored again and Bayern Munich tuned up for its Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid with a com‐ fortable 5‐1 win at Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Kane raised his Bundesliga tally to 33 goals in 30 appear‐ ances, while fellow forwards Eric Maxim Choupo‐Moting and Mathys Tel had rare starts as Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel made six changes from the team that sealed Champions League progress with a 1‐0 win over Ar‐ senal on Wednesday.

Kane also set up Tel to score Bayern's fourth goal. Thomas Müller scored twice after Leon Goretzka got the scoring under‐ way.

After Bayer Leverkusen clinched the title last weekend, Bayern's only hope of a trophy this season remains the Champi‐ ons League. Tuchel left out Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala from the squad altogether with a view toward Madrid's trip to Munich for the first leg of their semifinal on April 29.

Union dropped to 14th in the 18‐team league, just three points above the relegation zone.

COLOGNE FACING DROP

Cologne's hopes of survival were dealt a major blow after losing 2‐0 at home to last‐placed Darmstadt, the visitor's first win since October.

Darmstadt defender Christoph Klarer scored in the 57th minute when the ball landed luringly at his feet after Cologne defenders failed to clear a corner.

Some Cologne fans were left in tears after Oscar Vilhelmsson sealed Darmstadt's win in the final minute, bringing Cologne's seventh relegation from the Bundesliga a step closer.

Cologne remained second from bottom, four points behind in‐ form Mainz before its game at Freiburg on Sunday, and five be‐ hind Bochum, which lost in Wolfsburg 1‐0.

Darmstadt remained last but its supporters celebrated the end of their team's 22‐game winless run. Darmstadt hadn't won since Oct. 7.

Four rounds remain after this weekend. The bottom two are automatically relegated, while the team that finishes third from bottom faces a two‐leg playoff against the third‐place finisher in the second division to deter‐ mine which side plays in the Bundesliga next season.

Leipzig consolidated fourth place and boosted its chances of Champions League qualification with a 2‐1 win at Heidenheim, and Anton Stach had the final say in a wild finish as Hoffen‐ heim defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 4‐3.

ANOTHER DEFEAT FOR NAPOLI

Napoli’s troublesome Serie A title defense took another hit in a 1‐0 loss at relegation‐threat‐ ened Empoli on Saturday.

The defeat left Napoli in eighth place, a whopping 34 points be‐ hind leader Inter Milan, and at risk of failing to qualify for Eu‐ rope.

Alberto Cerri scored four min‐ utes in with a header for Empoli, which moved four points clear of the drop zone.

Napoli has struggled all season and has had three different coaches without ever finding the form that led the Partenopei to their first Italian league title in more than three decades a year ago.
