Plans for Seoul Street include temporary car-free closures

-

Seoul Street in the Sukhbaatar District is included in the city’s plans for the new Lighted Night and Car-free Street project. O.Odjargal, a specialist in the Waste Management Department of Ulaanbaatar City Mayor Office, tells us more about these plans.

Please give us more detailed information about the Ligthted Night and Car-free Street project.

The project has already begun, as the warm season is coming and we are adding new places where people can spend their leisure time by closing roads at certain times to allow pedestrians to enjoy shops and entertainment centers.

What do you mean when you say roads will be closed at certain times, will vehicles be prohibited all day and all week?

People have misunderstood that the road closures will last all day and be permanent, or that they will last a whole week. Currently, we are discussing the time table for closing roads. Previously, it was discussed that roads might only be closed over the weekend, from Friday at 10:00 p.m. This is just at the discussion level. Generally, streets will only be closed for one day. We have not yet reached any agreement about the time table.

What is the plan and design for Lighted Night?

Various light designs and decorations will be hung along the streets. We will pave and expand sidewalks, screens and benches will be installed, and green areas will be restored in shifts. The installation of road and sidewalk lights has already started. according to plans from the Ulaanbatar City Planning and General Development Office.

Where will the street closures start and end?

Now we are building and determining land utilization from the National Circus and Seoul Street intersection to the west, at Naran Plaza. This area will become a Lighted Night Street.
