Acting Resident Director
The American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS) is seeking a Resident Director (Acting) for its Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia office. The ACMS is a non-profit, non-governmental educational organization that supports the development of Mongolian Studies and academic exchanges with Inner Asia. The ACMS is a member of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) with funding from the US government, private foundations and member institutions and individuals. The ACMS Resident Director is responsible for the management of the ACMS Ulaanbaatar office, staff and programs, and assists with the development of new programs, partners and funding sources. The position requires an ability to work effectively with international and Mongolian academic institutions, scholars and students, diplomatic staff, international donor and aid agencies, and the business sector. Experience working or studying in Mongolia or Inner Asia is required.
The position is salaried and approx. 50-60% time. Ideally the candidate will be able to start work by Oct 1, 2017. Screening of candidates and interviews will begin on September 15, 2017.
The position details are negotiable to fit the preferred candidate, and will be reviewed in spring 2018 for consideration of full-time and/ or a longterm basis based on performance, the availability of funding and the preferences of the candidate.
The responsibilities of the ACMS Acting Resident Director include:
• Development and oversight of ACMS programs in Mongolia, including the Cultural Heritage program, educational programs, the ACMS library, an intensive Mongolian language program, fellowships, internships, speaker series, conferences and other initiatives;
• Developing new programs, partnerships, and grant requests to support the ACMS mission. • Facilitating the research activities of international scholars and students in Mongolia, including providing logistical support and helping locate partner institutions
and scholars in Mongolia.
• Building and maintaining good relationships and initiating programs with Mongolian and international institutions, scholars and students.
• Overseeing the financial accounting and management of the ACMS operations in Mongolia, including management of the ACMS staff;
• Working collaboratively with other ACMS employees outside Mongolia including the Executive Director, the Cultural Heritage Program Coordinator, and the Board of Directors.
• Supporting the writing and editing of publications including the ACMS website and social media, press releases, grant proposals and reports;
Preferred qualifications for the position include:
• Experience managing personnel and finances
in a non-profit organization environment • Experience living, working or studying in
Mongolia or Inner Asia
• Experience and knowledge of higher
education institutions and academic research.
