Map of Buddhist temples and monasteries exhibited
A map of Buddhist temples and monasteries that have been around since 1937 was introduced on October 6.
The map, created by the Mongolian Tradition Academy NGO, Gandantegchinlen Monastery and Institute of Philosophy of Mongolian Academy of Sciences, covers 339 soums of 21 provinces and is available in two scales, 1:2500000 and 1:1800000.
Director of the Mongolian Tradition Academy L.Dashnyam said that they conducted research works required for the making of the map for nearly five years and noted, “The new map was well-made based on many research materials and is better than any map of the same scale in terms of content and scope. A total of 1,480 landmarks have been mapped, particularly 266 newly built or renovated temples, 1,035 ruin sites, and 139 unidentified ruins.”
The first draft of the map was developed by G.Nandin-Erdene, a specialist at the Remote Sensing Division of the Information and Research Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment.
Specialist at the Institute of Philosophy PhD A.Khishiglen noted, “We strived to mark ruin sites and temples by the name of a nearby water body or place in the map. The map is significant for reminding old names of places and rivers to the public, promoting their usage, and preserving the traditional names of every place.”
“This work is a very important contribution to protecting our history and cultural sites, rehabilitating them, and raising public awareness about them,” she said.
