Flooding closes Tavan Tolgoi mine road

-

Due to heavy rain that began in early July, the Tavan Tolgoi–Tsagaan Khad road was flooded more than 60 times, causing damage at 39 areas along the coal transport road. The main road used to transport coal from the Tavan Tolgoi mine to the Tsagaan Khad zone has been indefinitely closed for repairs as a result of the damage.

Transport has ceased completely, with 10,000 trucks belonging to 130 companies unable to conduct transport. Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi is providing the responders and truck drivers food and sanitary products.

Weather forecasts indicate that heavy rainfall will continue in the area, making it difficult to conduct repairs on the roads. Meanwhile, Coal transport from Tavan Tolgoi to Gashuunsukhait border crossing was suspended recently due to flooding and the road damage that was caused by the flooding.

On July 30, heavy downpour in Khanbogd soum of Umnugovi Province caused flooding on the Tavan Tolgoi to Gashuunsukhait road. The heavy flooding has caused mudslides in some areas, which has caused significant damage. Additional dirt roads are being established at the Tavan Tolgoi to Gashuunsukhait road. The additional roads were made operational on August 1. Meanwhile, workers will be creating a makeshift water drainage system to prevent any additional water damage.
