Rising water levels in 8 rivers concerns NEMA

The National Emergency Management and other authoritie­s are continuing to alert the public about potential flooding risks.

It reported that water levels of eight rivers are continuing to rise, nearing the danger mark. In particular, Bogd, Ongi, Selenge and middle section of Orkhon rivers that flow from the Khangai Mountain Ranges; Egg, Khuder, Onon, Kherlen (around Mungunmori­t soum), Khovd, Kharkhiraa and Chigj rivers that flow from Khuvsgul Mountain Ranges; and Orkhon River are on the verge of a flood.

Rain forecasts for the next few days are fueling concerns for flooding. It has been raining in most eastern province and some areas in west, central and Gobi region over the weekend but forecasts show that there will be more rainfall in most western provinces and some eastern provinces on Monday and in almost all central provinces and a few western and eastern provinces on Tuesday.

With the high risk of flooding, authoritie­s are advising residents:

To immediatel­y inform others when flood warnings are issued.

Not to leave children unattended near rivers, lakes ponds and other bodies of water.

Avoid going on vacations to other cities and provinces. If it can’t be canceled, make sure to drive with precaution. Avoid going near bodies of water and swimming especially when under the influence of alcohol.

Make sure not to use roads and bridges marked unsafe for travel.

Avoid setting up gers near water drains, dams and shores.

Build water drainage pipes and dams to prevent flooding and damages to property.
