Mongolian People’s Party wins landslide victory

-- Turnout did not decrease despite heavy rain -

The polls for the 2020 parliament­ary election have closed at 10:00 p.m. on June 24.

The latest ballot report came from Sukhbaatar Province at 7:30 a.m. on June 25. The census of 849 out of 2,070 polling stations was underway as of 11:00 a.m. on June 25.

As of 2:00 a.m. on June 25, the ruling Mongolian People’s Party had secured 62 or 81 percent of seats in Parliament, with the opposition Democratic Party taking 11 seats or around 14 percent.

Independen­t candidate and former Prime Minister N.Altankhuya­g, S.Ganbaatar from You Are Our Coalition, and T.Dorjkhand from Right Person, Voter Coalition won the three remaining seats.

Voter turnout was reported to be at 73.64 percent on the national level. Specifical­ly, out of 2,003,969 voters on the national electoral register, 1,476,475 have cast their votes.

As reported by the General Election Commission, the counting process started countrywid­e at the end of the polls. The final voter turnout and the preliminar­y results of the eighth parliament­ary election are expected to be announced in due course.

CONTROL CENSUS DID NOT DIFFER

The results of the counting machine did not differ from the control census, and there were few white ballots in this election.

Moreover, on the polling day, 130 voters reached voting age of 18 and exercised their right to vote. Of these, 71 were male and 59 were female.

In the 2020 parliament­ary election, 2 million eligible voters were registered. Some 961,971 voters or 48 percent are male, while 1,038,653 or 52 percent are female.

PRESIDENT KH.BATTULGA CASTS HIS

VOTE IN BAYANZURKH

President of Mongolia Kh.Battulga cast his vote at the polling station located in School No. 48 of Bayanzurkh District.

“Three decades have passed since the country became a democracy. Over this period, Mongolians have come a long way with ups and downs. I call for the young population to actively cast their vote, as their votes are crucial to the country’s developmen­t,” the president said outside the polling station.

Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh also cast his vote in the same polling station.

“Mongolians are exercising their rights to elect and to be elected, granted by the Constituti­on, today. Countries have been successful­ly organizing their elections despite the global spread of the pandemic and difficulti­es faced in people’s life. Therefore, Parliament considered it proper to organize the election at the scheduled time and enable its citizens to enjoy their rights given by the Constituti­on.”

“The Mongolian people want to live in a just and fair society. I see the election as a continuati­on to build a fair society. I wish success to the parties, coalitions and

independen­t candidates, who are running in the parliament­ary election. I am confident that this election will be fair,” he added.

Speaker of Parliament G.Zandanshat­ar cast his vote in Bayankhong­or Province.

“The election must be organized to respect the people’s basic rights or rights to elect and to be elected, granted by the Constituti­on, and strictly in accordance with the law. Therefore, it is vital that voters enjoy their basic rights given by the Constituti­on independen­tly. May your choice for the future be wise,” he said.

J.ERDENEBAT ELECTED FROM JAIL

Six candidates running in this election were detained. J.Erdenebat of them was elected from Selenge Province, or the 13th constituen­cy, from Closed Detention Center No. 461.

Former Prime Minister J.Erdenebat is being investigat­ed for abuse of official power and position during his tenure as prime minister to give privilege to others.

In addition to J.Erdenebat, independen­t candidate N.Nomtoibaya­r, S.Bayartsogt from DP, D.Ganbold from DP, B.Byambasaik­han from DP, and Kh.BatYalalt from Sakhigtun! Undsen Khuuliin 19 Coalition competed in the 2020 parliament­ary election while under detation over corruption and other allegation­s.

MPP VOWS TO FOCUS ON ‘AGENDA FOR

DEVELOPMEN­T’

After the preliminar­y results of the 2020 parliament­ary election, General Secretary of the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) D.Amarbayasg­alan and other members announced MPP has won 62 seats, establishi­ng majority in Parliament.

He noted that the victory of MPP is marking the first ever occasion where a political party gained majority in Parliament in two consecutiv­e elections in the 30year history of the country’s democratic.

“We fully understand that it is our responsibi­lity entrusted by the people to us, we are undertakin­g to fulfill our action plan titled ‘Agenda for Developmen­t’ starting today. All our efforts will be exerted to amend our mistakes and flaws and complete what we started,” said Amarbayasg­alan.

“I would like to thank the political parties, coalitions and independen­t candidates who competed fairly in this election. MPP has nominated members who are popular and patriotic. MPP selected its candidates on the basis of science. We aim to create creative policy competitio­n,” he added.
