Camp Elephant in Erindi Private Game Reserve has a campsite next to a waterhole. Erindi Lodge is luxurious, and they didn’t skimp on the campsite either – the facilities are better than most guesthouses!

The camp is fenced to keep dangerous animals out – you can hike the trail along the perimeter to see some game. But you’ll want to spend most of your time at the waterhole.

Sit on the benches (even at night: there are spotlights) and watch elephant, zebra, red hartebeest, warthog and baboons come to drink.

View game in the reserve, drive to Omaruru for an outing, or explore the dirt roads around the dramatic Erongo Mountain to the west.

Rates: Camping R890 per stand (for up to five people). Camp Elephant self-catering chalets R1 790 per night for the first two people, R690 per extra adult, R395 per child under 12. Luxury accommodation also available – see their website for details. Where? 60 km south-east of Omaruru. GPS: S21.54539 E16.38775 Contact: 00 264 81 145 0000;
