ADVENTURE ITINERARY

DAY 1: The tour starts near Kamieskroo­n. We’ll explore the Skilpad section of the Namaqua National Park, famous for its daisies.

DAY 2: We drive the back roads of the West Coast and visit a shipwreck at Hondeklipb­aai before turning north. Our overnight stop is at McDougall’s Bay, near Port Nolloth.

DAY 3: After breakfast we leave for the Richtersve­ld. We pass through the villages of Lekkersing, Eksteenfon­tein and Kuboes. We stay two nights at Sendelings­drift on the Orange River.

DAY 4: We spend the day in the beautiful Richtersve­ld National Park.

DAY 5: We cross the border into Namibia by ferry over the Orange River and drive via the mining town of Rosh Pinah to Aus where we’ll look for the wild horses.

DAY 6: It’s only 100 km to the deserted Kolmanskop, where a local guide takes us through this mining ghost town. After lunch we explore Lüderitz.

DAY 7: You have the option to visit the Sperrgebie­t, Pomona and the impressive Bogenfels rock arch – at an additional cost. Or you can spend the day in Lüderitz.

DAY 8: We leave the coast behind and drive inland towards the Fish River Canyon, stopping at the Hobas viewpoint to watch the sunset.

DAY 9: After a few hours at Ai-Ais Hot Springs, we head to the Norotshama River Resort on the banks of the Orange River.

DAY 10: After breakfast it’s time to say goodbye.

The camp has a great location with a view over a type of pan – essentiall­y part of the extended Linyanti wetland. There are five stands: R250 p.p. Rate includes firewood and there’s limited solar power available to charge an important device. There’s a small and relatively unknown David Livingston­e museum 2 km from the campsite. At the time of going to print negotiatio­ns were underway with Nkasa Rupara Lodge (see below), which will take over the campsite. Current facilities include four stands with no power, under big shade trees. Camping costs R80 p.p.

Note: This is wilderness park – seasoned 4x4 drivers will enjoy the water crossings. Entrance into the park via small bridges has been improved. GPS: S18.31778 E23.66188

Contact: 00 264 81 279 4888 (Stephen) 97 Nkasa Lupala Lodge In Nkasa Rupara National Park along the main access road near the Sisintze office where you pay your park fee (R30 p.p. per day, plus R10 per vehicle). Book at Nkasa Lupala Lodge if you want more upmarket accommodat­ion. If you stay for two nights or more it costs R1 700 p.p. per night sharing (DB&B). Children 12 years and younger get discount. The campsite is 4 km west of the Ngoma border post, with views of the Chobe River towards Botswana. There are six stands, each with private ablution facilities but no power, under large ana trees. Camp Chobe has a swimming pool, bar and restaurant (dinner costs R300 p.p.).

They also have activities on offer: Paddle on the river or go on a guided walk or game drive. Elephants like to stroll through the camp at night, so stay in your tent after dark. Remember: You get a discount if you’re a Gondwana Card holder. GPS: S17.89806 E24.72809 Contact: 00 264 61 427 200;

chalets are, but you can check out the Zambezi from the bar, which is built on a deck over the river. Birdwatchi­ng is probably the second most popular activity after fishing for tiger fish. Camping (two stands, each with power) R120 per adult; R60 per child under 12. Chalets from R550 p.p. sharing (self-catering); R650 p.p. (B&B); R850 p.p. (DB&B). Discounts for children under 12. Sunset cruise from R300 per person for two people – the bigger the group, the lower the rate. Kids younger than 5 pay even less. During the rainy season (summer) the road to the lodge can be quite tricky – a 4x4 or a vehicle with a high ground clearance is recommende­d. If you’re driving a 4x4 you will easily manage the last stretch of road. Phone ahead if you think you’ll need help with transport. The lodge is a favourite among anglers, as the river is full of tiger fish and bream. Camping (18 stands) R155 p.p. Campers may also use the swimming pool and restaurant. Self-catering cottages R640 p.p. until the end of April, thereafter R710 p.p. Accommodat­ion including meals until end of April R760 p.p. B&B and R980 p.p. DB&B.
