go! Namibia

A big, big tree

-

Northern Namibia is known for its huge baobabs and the trees in Tsandi and Outapi, both west of Oshakati, attract lots of visitors.

Not this tree north of Grootfontein, however, despite it being declared a national monument in 1951. At the time, it was the biggest baobab known to the Namibian government.

There aren’t any officials or staff at the tree, but there is a parking area and a gate that you’ll need both arms to prise open. From the gate it’s about a 700 m walk into the veld to reach the baobab. Enjoy the silence in the presence of this giant.

Where? Follow the B8 from Grootfontein towards Rundu. After 4 km, turn left onto the M73. About 8 km further, turn right onto the D2848 and drive 39 km to the fork in the road – continue left on the D2855. After 33 km you’ll see a sign to the tree on the right.
