NAMAs predictions: weekend 4

Let’s recap my predictions for weekend 4 of the Namibian Annual Music Awards. I predicted Ethnix will win the Best Group/Duo category and PDK, Best Music Video.

All my analyses and sciences behind my predictions are in last week’s contribution of #IndustryLoop. I’m sure if you google “NAMA’s prediction: weekend 4”, it will surface.

Next weekend, we are looking at Best Soukous Kwasa, Best Afrikaans, Best Damara Punch and Best Oviritje.

That aside, I think it’s worrisome that after 10 years of the NAMAs, the general public still does not understand how the awards work.

You find people making comments like “Bring back the Sanlam/NBC awards”.

Are we downright ignorant people or just dumb AF? Because honestly, how many press releases, workshops, press conferences, newspaper articles, TV interviews, and news bulletins does the NAMAs need for people to understand how the awards work?

When the nominations were announced earlier this year, one would see fans comment on artists’ posts with “we will vote for you”. Bruh, after 10 years of the NAMAs, we do not kama know the awards only have two voting categories? What’s weird (but really not surprising) is that artists themselves do not even bother to correct their fans.

It’s as if artists enjoy it when their fans are misinformed about how the awards work. My suspicion is that they do this so that when they do not win in a said category, they could ride on their fans’ frustrations. Artists enjoy it when fans question the credibility of the awards.

Funny because most of these artists who see out this ill-thought-out strategy do not realise that if the credibility of the awards comes into question, their previous wins at the same awards can also be questioned, leading to a credibility crisis as a whole. If it’s one thing I appreciate about the NAMAs is that they were never shy of correcting themselves.

All of this is bad for future prospects if you think about it. Which Namibian corporate would want to take over from MTC and jump into an industry where the fans are ignorant and dumb AF? Artists are ignorant and dumb AF, and the general Namibian public seems to lean towards international content as opposed to Namibian. I swear, if I was a CEO or a board chair...why would I risk the good name of my organisation to get involved with an industry as deurmekaar as the entertainment industry?

Do you now see that the bigger picture at the end of the day is tainted because of short-sighted egos and ignorance? At the end of the day, if a corporate does not see the value in taking over the awards, the whole entertainment industry loses. The government already does not count the industry as a serious industrial player...to lose the corporate world would be a cancerous economic blow to the entertainment industry.

Let’s put our stupid egos aside. Correct our fans when they are wrong or misinformed and in turn, safeguard the credibility of the awards.

Next weekend’s virtual staging features Best Soukous Kwasa, Best Afrikaans, Best Damara Punch and Best Oviritje. D-R-AM-A!

Until the next loop, we say “GMTM”!
