Kavango West schools managing amid pandemic
RUNDU – The director of education in KavangoWest, Teopolina Hamutumua, says schools in the region have safely reopened with strict health protocols in place, although challenges persist.
“We don’t have cases in our schools for now; operations at schools are relatively going well but the water and sanitation challenges are still there,” Hamutumua said.
“We are still busy with the construction of the Covid-19 projects – and also, there is a lot of progress done with the connection of water to schools; every week, we receive updates on that.”
Hamutumua said the ministry is currently working around the clock to ensure the provision of water is addressed at rural schools.
The washing of hands with soap
and water is seen as one of the most efficient measures against Covid-19.
“I think we are expecting a permanent solution in regards to water at our schools by December – as, by that time, most of our schools will be connected,” she said.
According to the director, schools in the region made arrangements to ensure smooth learning and teaching despite the challenges.
Some of the well-equipped schools are allowing learners to attend classes at the same time, while those with inadequate classrooms allow learners to attend lessons on separate days.
Hamutumua further noted that all schools in the region resumed with the learning and teaching as expected by the ministry of education and they are following guidelines on how things should be handled at schools. - jmuyamba@nepc.com.na
