ONGWEDIVA – A nine-monthold baby was found alive yesterday morning after she was dumped in a pit latrine at Omauni village in Ohangwena region. The baby was allegedly thrown in the pit latrine where she endured nine hours before she was rescued.

A 22-year-old mother is now facing a charge of attempted murder. Ohangwena police commander Commissioner Elizabeth Mukete-Sibolile said the suspect threw the baby down the pit on Monday at around 22h00 and was only discovered on Tuesday morning around 07h00.

The nine-month baby girl had been down the pit for at least nine hours. The baby was discovered alive by a man who was passing by.

“He allegedly heard a baby crying – and upon investigation, he saw that there was a baby thrown down the pit,” said MuketeSibolile.

The man allegedly ran to the police station for help and the baby was retrieved and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Mukete-Sibolile said it is not the first time the suspect has attempting to kill the baby. She further said although the suspect has other children, there is also further information that she does not like that particular one.

Because of the relation with her mother, Mukete-Sibolile said the baby will be referred to the ministry of gender equality. Mother dumps twins Meanwhile, in the Oshana region, a 22-year-old has been charged for concealment of birth after two bodies of twins were discovered in a toilet in Ongwediva.

The bodies were allegedly wrapped in a black plastic bag and placed in the toilet. According to police spokesperson in Oshana Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, the police was alerted after people in her vicinity discovered the suspect was no longer pregnant and alerted the police on Monday.

She is alleged to have given birth on Friday. When interrogated, the suspect allegedly led the police to the toilet where the bodies of the twin girls were.

Aiyambo said the bodies have been transported to the police mortuary while the suspect is detained at the Ongwediva police holding cells.

The suspect will be taken to hospital for examination.

Investigations in both matters continue.
