Enguruvau tourney this weekend
The first edition of the Enguruvau open tournament is set to take place at Enguruvau in the Otjozondjupa region on Saturday and Sunday.
Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, tournament organiser Charles Rinouzeu Hukununa said the aim of the tournament is to promote sports amongst the youth, keep them busy and away from illicit activities.
“With the absence of top flight football and in- house fighting in the country, it’s our responsibility as sports developers from grassroots level to make sure that our youth are being cared for through such tourneys, it keeps them active and prepares them for
future sporting activities should there be a green light at the end of the tunnel,” said Hukununa.
He further noted that the tourney will be organised in conjunction with Charles Rinouzeu Hukununa Rural Sports Development as the main sponsor of the tournament, with a strategic plan for investing back in the local schools in the Omatako constituency of the Otjozondjupa region.
“Schools in the area are in dire need of stationery as most of the parents can’t afford to buy their kids school shoes and other necessities,” said Hukununa, adding that some of the gate takings will be contributed to selected schools in the Omatako constituency to ease some of those predicaments.
An amount of N$ 10 000 will be up for grabs with places reserved for the first 20 teams only. Interested teams will be registering with N$850. The tournament winning team will walk away N$5 000 plus 16 gold medals while the runners-up walk away with N$2 500 and 16 silver medals. The two semi-final losers will each receive N$1 250.
Hukununa also stated that due to the new Covid-19 protocols, only the first 200 people including players and officials will be allowed in the stadium with all Covid-19 rules being practiced.
