WALVIS BAY – The joint Walvis Bay Residents Association is determined to make the harbour town the heartbeat of its residents.

The association has registered with the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) and will be taking part in this month’s local authority elections scheduled for 25 November.

Speaking earlier to New Era on the vision, the association has for Walvis Bay, leader Buddy B ram well said the mission is to strive towards the creation of an urban environment wherein all residents can enjoy equal opportunities to promote their individual quality of life to its fullest potential.

According to Bramwell, this can only happen with a diverse council that is not involved in any politics.

“We acknowledge that there have been some positive developments in the town, but we feel that more should be done for residents in terms of job creation, housing and other basic services – such is the long-overdue sewage system upgrade,” he said.

He added, once elected into power, they will also foster an interest amongst the community to partake in the activities of the local authority while also establishing effective communication channels between all relevant parties needed for the development of the town.

“We will also review policies, which may not be considered beneficial to all residents, and also revert to the old system where the town was divided in different blocks. Each councillor will be responsible for one block and will address all challenges under his or her block experiences,” he said.

He also added their work as a watchdog over the town’s affairs will continue even after the elections.

“We want to hold those in charge accountable and take them to task even if we do not get seats, as the aim is to bring change for its residents,” he added.

The local authority candidates for the association are Buddy Bramwell, Sharon Roodt, Marlene de Witt, Ziggy Hentze, Bertus Venter, William Plato, Chris Theron, Gavin Brazler, Estelle Botha and Uwe Bachmann.
