Athletes commission to host anti-doping workshop
Chairperson of the Namibia Athletes Commission, Gaby Ahrens has called on athletes to register for the upcoming antidoping workshop, slated for 14 November 2020. The workshop, scheduled to accommodate 80 participants, will educate athletes on recent anti-doping regulations and procedures.
Addressingamediaconference in the capital recently, Ahrens said athletes aspiring to compete at national and international level of different sports such as those represented at Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games are advised to attend.
“This workshop will be vital because it will prepare them for testing procedures during international competitions. The event will familiarise athletes from all kind of sports with clean sport messages,” she said.
She added that athletes are often tasked to understand which substances are on prohibited lists as well as ensuring that the substances they put in their body are clean. “A normal painkiller could put an athlete at risk if they are not aware of what chemicals are in them,” said Ahrens, who stated that the workshop will inform and educate athletes on the medical substances that are on the prohibited list and where to find credible and correct information.
Speaking at the same occasion, Olympians Michelle Vorster and Helalia Johannes shared their experiences and lessons they have learnt.
“It is important to stay informed and know what your rights and obligations are as athletes.
Once tested positive, it will be an embarrassment for yourself and your country. You cannot blame your coach or your doctor because it’s your job as an athlete to take responsibility and stay informed,” said Johannes.
Vorster said by sharing their experiences and what it feels like to get tested, they can prepare other athletes for the future. Athletes who are outside Windhoek will be catered for by the Namibia Athletes Commission if their applications for attendance are received before 10 November 2020. - Nampa
