Understanding the importance of maintaining peace in a democratic society
Since Namibia gained its independence in 1990, peace prevailed in our country. The UN resolution 435 paved the way to start the peace negotiations and eventual transition for Namibia to become a sovereign state. Our constitution, one of the best in the world, also provides guiding principles on how the country should be governed and imposes sanctions for human rights violations. Peace and stability are two of the cornerstones of Namibia’s democratic values, and it is the collective responsibility of all
citizens to maintain and observe it at all times.
A stable and peaceful country creates a conducive and stable investment climate that can lead to improved socioeconomic circumstances that benefit all citizens. In any peaceful society, citizens can freely collaborate and proudly enhance their living standards.
Peace enables Namibia to maintain our good reputation among the world community allowing our country to build and enhance relations with other countries confidently. On the other hand, war, conflict or lawlessness leads to instability which can result in the loss of lives, depletion or waste of resources and hinder development.
Namibia’s law enforcement agencies play a crucial role in ensuring that society lives in peace and harmony without conflict and violence.
The Namibian Police Force, in particular, is mandated to implement rules and regulations as well as enforce law and order within our society to ensure that safety and security prevail in the country.
As we are embarking on the coming regional and local council authority elections, scheduled for 25 November 2020, let us conduct our elections constitutionally and democratically without resorting to chaos, lawlessness or violence. The Namibian Police Force, therefore, calls on all citizens that we commit to guarding our freedom and stability with zeal. After 30 years of free and fair democratic processes, Namibia has become an example of democracy in action. Let’s preserve and strive to do even better and maintain our peaceful values and ethos.
CAUTION: Stay alert, make the right decisions and be a law abiding citizen.
