Aircraft technician dies after crash

A 38-year-old man, employed as an aircraft technician in the Namibian Defence Force, died in a Windhoek hospital hours after he was involved in a car accident on Saturday morning.

The tragic incident occurred at about 01h30 near Mix settlement north of Windhoek.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said the victim was driving a white Toyota Hilux double cab from Windhoek to Mix when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

He was alone in the car. Shikwambi said the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, sustained serious injuries, adding that the accident was only reported at about 05h00 and it was the time that the ambulance also arrived at the scene.

He later died in the Katutura state hospital.

“It appears that the accident was not discovered by anyone to report it until early morning when a passerby saw the overturned vehicle and alerted the authority. His next of kin were informed,” said Shikwambi.

Sources, who requested anonymity, told New Era the victim attended a staff year-end function the night before the fatal crash.

In another accident, a 45-yearold man died instantly on the Okahandja-Karibib road on Friday after losing control of the vehicle, which left the road, hit a culvert and collided into a tree.

The man, who was driving a Toyota Hilux double cab, died on the scene, while two passengers sustained moderate to serious injuries.

“The deceased’s body was taken to Usakos state hospital mortuary from where it will be transported to Walvis Bay police mortuary for postmortem examination to determine the cause of death,” she said.
